Job Summary

  • The Director of Physician Auditing & Education leads the strategic direction, implementation, and management of coding education and auditing programs for hospital-employed physician groups across the organization
  • This role is accountable for ensuring accurate, compliant, and consistent coding practices and serves as a key liaison with physician leadership, coders, and compliance teams
  • The Director ensures that provider documentation supports appropriate code selection and drives education based on trends and audit findings
  • This role is accountable and auditing and educating physicians and APPs of all specialties

Essential Functions

  • Develop and implement a standardized enterprise-wide physician coding education and auditing program
  • Conduct and supervise coding audits to ensure adherence to federal and state regulations and payer guidelines
  • Partner with compliance and legal teams to assess risk areas and address findings from internal or external audits
  • Analyze coding data, identify trends, and create targeted education and action plans for improvement
  • Collaborate with coding team, medical directors, department chairs, practice managers, and executive leadership to ensure coding and documentation alignment with clinical workflows
  • Maintain current knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, CMS, and payer-specific rules and guidelines
  • Provide regular reporting to executive leadership on audit results, education initiatives, and compliance performance
  • Coordinate development and delivery of provider training sessions, coding newsletters, tip sheets, and ongoing education programs
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for physician coding, acting as a resource for field leaders and support teams

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Expert knowledge of professional fee coding, billing regulations, and audit methodology
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in auditing tools and systems
  • Excellent communication, training, and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with physicians and executive leadership
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management capabilities
  • Proficiency with EHR and coding platforms (e.g., Athena, Epic, Cerner, 3M)
  • Ability to provide recorded trainings, training via web (Teams), as well as face to face training
  • Sedentary work with extensive use of computers
  • Occasional travel required to physician practice sites and corporate meetings
  • Remote work environment with periodic onsite presence at facilities or physician practices

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Health Administration, Nursing, or related field required (or years’ experience in lieu of)
  • Master’s degree preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Current coding certification required (e.g., CPC)
  • Additional certification in auditing or compliance preferred (e.g., CHC, CEMC)

Experience

  • Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in physician coding and auditing within a large healthcare organization
  • Minimum 3 years in a leadership or management role overseeing coding teams and/or education programs
  • Experience working with hospital-owned physician practices across multiple states strongly preferred
  • Personal experiencing with providing one on one and group education sessions with physicians and physician extenders (i.e. residents, APP’s)
