Job Summary

  • Manages and oversees the Division’s coding services with responsibility for planning, organizing, and implementing operations of coding department
  • Provides oversight of regulatory changes in the industry and communicates changes to Division leadership and coding staff

Essential Functions

  • Designs, implements, and documents a process for inpatient and outpatient medical record coding
  • Manages the daily operations of the coding department ensuring timely and accurate coding of medical records
  • Utilizes daily, monthly and periodic reports to manage staff performance relative to timely and accurate coding
  • Provides development guidance and assists in the identification, implementation and maintenance of HIM policies and procedures related to medical coding
  • Manages and analyzes work and information flow process to maximize the revenue cycle. Makes recommendations for improvements and executes changes for new coding programs
  • Communicates with hospital personnel supporting coding and billing initiatives
  • Serves as a resource to Kindred facilities related to coding
  • Provides continuing education related to inpatient and outpatient coding to staff on a routine and annual basis
  • Supports internal and external coding and documentation evaluations
  • Collaborates with Division medical staff, administrator and HIM staff to support coding initiatives
  • Interviews, selects, ensures orientation and proper training, evaluates and when necessary, disciplines and/or discharges departmental personnel
  • Researches, defines, implements, and provides education on pertinent regulatory changes within coding industry

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Experience

  • Knowledge of the principles of medical record coding in order to plan, organize, direct, and control the processes of data quality and compliance to meet standards of accrediting agencies
  • Expertise and credentials in medical records coding
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work in order to meet job demands
  • Ability to communicate effectively and present information in an organized manner on a routine basis
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all patient and/or employee information to assure patient and/or employee rights are protected
  • Ability to maintain a good working relationship with peers, superiors and subordinates while working under stressful situations
  • Ability to manage several projects/tasks simultaneously
  • Technical understanding of coding operating systems (hardware and software) and is first call to support when these malfunction
  • Communicates effectively and exhibits courteous behavior when dealing with coding department employees, as well as physician and hospital employees served
  • Approximate percent of time required to travel: 25

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare or business or related field required
  • Master’s degree preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred
  • American Health Information Management (AHIMA) 
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or American Academy of Professional Coder (AAPC) 
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Professional Coder – Hospital (CPC-H) 
  • Coding Certification required

Experience

  • 7 years medical records coding and auditing experience in an acute care setting with multiple specialty disciplines
  • Long-term acute care coding experience desired
  • 5 years prior manager level experience required
