Job Summary

  • The Risk Management Specialist is responsible for investigating potential liability claims, identifying high-risk trends, educating staff on risk mitigation strategies, and collaborating with internal teams to improve patient safety and reduce professional liability exposure
  • This role serves as the first point of contact for facility-level risk issues and supports process improvement across the organization

Essential Functions

  • Independently assesses and supports risk management needs across assigned facilities including community hospitals, specialty hospitals, and post-acute assets
  • Develops and delivers risk management education and training to facility and regional staff
  • Facilitates monthly meetings with regional clinical teams to review trends, adverse events, claim activity, and regulatory outcomes
  • Coordinates with Legal, Compliance, Clinical Operations, and Claims teams to address and mitigate identified risks
  • Conducts on-site investigations into adverse events with high claim potential under the direction of legal counsel
  • Acts as first responder to facility leaders and regional teams regarding risk-related questions
  • Directs facility response plans for potential or actual risk events and reports to the liability claims team
  • Maintains detailed logs of interventions and educational sessions in a secure and confidential database
  • Intervenes with patients, residents, and families to address and resolve concerns, aiming to reduce liability exposure and avoid formal claims

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong background in clinical care or healthcare operations, preferably in long-term or acute care
  • Excellent investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge of healthcare regulations and risk management best practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation abilities
  • Effective interpersonal skills and ability to manage sensitive or conflict-prone situations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and risk management software systems

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field required
  • Nursing degree preferred

Licenses/Certifications

  • RN or Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) preferred but not required

Experience 

  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience in nursing, clinical operations, risk management, or liability claims
