Under the supervision of an RN, performs basic patient care activities.
Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age. Assists with restraining patients when ordered and checking for contraband. Provides patient care that meets the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient within the scope of practice for a certified nursing assistant/ nursing assistant. Assists with patient admissions, discharges and transfers. Provides morning care which may include bed bath, shower, whirlpool, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning over bed table and bedside stand, straightening room and other general care as necessary throughout the shift. Provides evening care which includes hands/ face washing as needed, oral hygiene, back rubs, peri-care, refreshing linen, cleaning over bed tables, straightening room laundry, and other general care as needed. Provides general nursing assistant care such as positioning patients, lifting and turning patients, applying/utilizing special equipment, assisting in use of bedpan, commode and ambulating patients. Prepares patients for meals, serves and removes food trays and assists with meals or feeds patients is necessary. Answers patients call lights and bed alarms, anticipates patient's needs and makes rounds of assigned patients. Transports patients to various departments for ordered tests/ procedures. Takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, blood pressure and intake- output. Reports patient complain of pain/abnormal behaviors to supervising LPN/ RN. Observes patients mental and physical conditions, reports any changes to supervising RN. Communicates in a clear and concise manner to LPNs, RNs, and medical staff. Competency in phlebotomy and EKGs must be obtained within one year of hire date to remain in the Patient Care Tech position. Provide daily activities as scheduled, document and encourage patients to participate.
QualificationsMinimum Education
High School diploma, GED or equivalent required.
Current Mississippi Certified Nursing Assistant license preferred but not required for Patient Care Tech I or II.
Required Skills
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
Patient Care Tech I- This position is a Nursing Assistant who has signed off to become competent in phlebotomy and EKGs.
