Job Summary

  • Provides for the spiritual needs of patients and families

Essential Functions

  • Minister to and chart, when necessary, each patient’s spiritual and emotional needs as warranted by initial and ongoing spiritual assessment
  • Provide pastoral crisis counseling and make referrals as deemed necessary to other members of the department’s staff
  • Support and comfort bereaved families and anxious patients who are preparing for surgery or have anxieties after surgery and facilitate weekly grief and oncology support groups
  • Communicate with hospital staff regarding patients’ needs when appropriate for fulfillment of patient care plan
  • Act as a liaison between family members and staff during difficult times and situations, provide information to staff
  • And assist the family upon the death of a patient
  • Participate in general orientation to new employees and specific orientation and education programs to nursing staff and intern nursing staff throughout the hospital when needed and/or when requested by Director
  • Participate in family conferences, including those involving medical ethics when appropriate and to otherwise support and minister to the nursing staff and physicians as requested or needed
  • Communicate events which occurred during the night shift which were significant or of a crisis-oriented nature in a logbook for the benefit of the day staff
  • Participate in staff reports, case conferences, and rounds
  • Serve on departmental committees, report daily activities and keep other records necessary for the Continuing Quality Improvement program of the department
  • Seek out programs, workshops, conventions and other opportunities that promote and increase effectiveness in ministry particular to their specific assignment, and to meet the criteria required by the various accrediting agencies

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Able to work closely and effectively as a team member with physicians, medical staff, employees, and patients
  • Possesses theological and psychological training and religious background to relate effectively with a wide variety of individuals with various educational, social, economic, and vocational backgrounds
  • Able to listen accurately and respond warmly and appropriately with mature judgment
  • Able to operate well under pressure and to cope with stressful situations which may arise in the performance of duties
  • Able to operate in a flexible work schedule to meet the demanding job requirements
  • Demonstrates a meaningful concern for the feelings, concerns, concerns, anxieties, etc. of all people and has the capacity to keep this information confidential
  • Approximate percentage of time required to travel: 0%
  • Must read, write and speak fluent English
  • Must have good and regular attendance
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education

  • Master of Divinity degree in theology or its equivalent
  • Successful completion of four quarters of Clinical Pastoral Education in an accredited program

Licenses/Certifications

  • Certification by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains or the College of Chaplains

Experience

  • One year of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) under a supervisor approved by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)
