Job Summary

  • Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Patient Sitter provides continuous observation and monitoring of patients who require enhanced safety measures due to medical or behavioral conditions
  • The Patient Sitter ensures patient safety by remaining within arm's reach or line-of-sight of the patient at all times, responding quickly to patient needs, and communicating significant changes in patient behavior or condition to nursing staff
  • Responsibilities include non-clinical support duties, emotional reassurance to patients, and assistance with maintaining a clean and safe environment

Essential Functions

  • Maintain constant visual observation of assigned patient; never leave the patient alone or out of sight
  • Alert nursing staff promptly when patient requires assistance or shows changes in condition
  • Provide emotional support and companionship to patients
  • Accompany patients off unit for tests or procedures, remaining in close proximity
  • Report any hazards or safety concerns to the nurse and help maintain a neat, orderly patient room
  • Record patient behavior and significant events as directed
  • Adhere to infection control and isolation procedures in accordance with facility policies
  • Follow RN directions regarding observation protocols, documentation, and response to patient behaviors
  • Perform basic support tasks including helping set up meal trays, removing trash, and assisting with linens
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times
  • Complete mandatory education and training requirements

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Must read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • Must have critical thinking skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment
  • Must be able to remain calm in stressful situations and respond appropriately
  • Familiarity with and proper use of translation services (e.g., Language Line) when needed
  • Regular and punctual attendance is required
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Licenses/Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • De-escalation training required within time frame required by facility policy

Experience

  • Previous healthcare or patient care experience preferred
