Job Summary

  • Assists in patient care throughout nursing areas and is responsible for the safe transport of patients via wheelchair or stretcher, dispatch services and appropriate documentation of services
  • Provides the services of an observer for any patient on a patient care unit who has been assessed to require constant observation to maximize his/her safety
  • Performs general receptionist and clerical duties in order to facilitate efficient functioning of the nursing unit

Essential Functions

To perform this job, an individual must perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • Maintains infection control awareness and adheres to infection control policies and procedures
  • Maintains awareness of changing policies, procedures, and system processes in order to most effectively expediate patient care
  • Reads unit communication book, postings and policy updates, as provided
  • Clarifies any questions regarding role or responsibilities
  • Reviews Emergency Department patient records, recovering pertinent information required by department PI, and delivers in a timely manner to medical records in the appropriate format
  • Copies charts for review as directed by PI indicators
  • Maintains records and patient information in a manner consistent with continued confidentiality
  • Formats medical records as requested and ensure completeness
  • Notifies ancillary services, outside agencies and individuals as requested by ED clinicians, in a time manner
  • Demonstrates excellence in telephone skills
  • Demonstrates familiarity with the process for locating comment points of contact
  • Initiates and completes patient charges and orders promptly and accurately
  • Demonstrates independent initiative in identifying orders needing to be entered with accuracy into hospital information software
  • Demonstrates familiarity with paper driven backup system during down time
  • Recovers sticker charges and directs to correct accounts
  • Provides patient care in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures as directed by RN or MD
  • Completes vital signs, places clients on appropriate non-invasive monitoring equipment, disrobes/drapes/gowns clients as appropriate
  • Recognizes normal parameters of vital signs and monitoring equipment indicators and report any outliers to RN
  • Obtains specimens as directed by RN to include urine, stool and sputum. Ensure specimens are properly collected, identified and delivered to correct locations/departments
  • May initiate indwelling urinary catheters as directed by RN
  • Assists with exams and procedures as requested by RN
  • Maintains supply availability for clinicians and continually restocks areas as needed
  • Maintains proper professional appearance by adhering to established nursing service dress code policy
  • Demonstrates ability to use all channels of communication to transmit information, address concerns and solve problems
  • Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality
  • Performs patient transport duties as assigned by RN
  • Provides personal care for the needs of patients
  • Changing bed linens and assistance with hygiene needs associated with incontinence, emesis and other body fluids
  • Maintains patient safety by elevating side rails and applying restraining devices when indicated. according to established procedures with no reported errors and documented restraint care
  • Provides sufficient protection and physical support to patients while in bed or chair, on a commode, ambulating, transferring or being transported
  • Demonstrates consistent ability to provide for patient positioning or ambulatory needs, according to procedures and direction
  • Provides restricted, supplemental fluids based on patient plan of care. Accurately reports intake and output. Adheres to medical orders regarding diet, food and/or food restrictions
  • Maintains a safe unit environment by adhering to the nursing safety plan on body mechanics, universal precautions, and fall prevention with no error trending
  • Answer patient call systems properly within 3 rings. Enforces the traffic control/visitation policies are adhered
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, required

License/Certification

  • SC CNA Certification, EMT or Nurse Tech. preferred
  • BLS-required upon hire and continuously thereafter
  • EKG Competency - required within 3 months of hire and continuously thereafter
  • 02 Assessment - required within 1 month of hire

Experience

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action
