Job Summary

  • The Nurse Tech-Assistant – ICU provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit
  • This role supports critically ill patients by assisting with basic care activities, clinical monitoring, and unit support tasks
  • The position requires close attention to detail, rapid response to patient needs, and strict adherence to infection control and safety standards

Essential Functions

  • Assists ICU patients with hygiene, mobility, and activities of daily living under RN supervision
  • Takes and documents vital signs, blood glucose levels, and intake/output measurements accurately
  • Performs electrocardiogram (ECG) setups, specimen collection, and other delegated technical tasks
  • Assists with patient positioning, turning, and mobility to prevent complications (e.g., pressure injuries)
  • Responds promptly to patient call lights and communicates critical information to licensed staff
  • Prepares and maintains ICU patient rooms and critical care equipment (e.g., suction, O2, monitors)
  • Applies and monitors use of restraints and follows protocols for safety and observation
  • Supports patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes in the ICU
  • Provides emotional support and maintains patient dignity during acute and end-of-life care
  • Ensures strict adherence to infection control, isolation procedures, and PPE standards

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills in high-acuity environments
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and ICU-specific protocols
  • Basic computer skills for electronic documentation
  • Ability to prioritize and adapt in rapidly changing clinical conditions
  • Knowledge of universal precautions and ICU safety standards
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Maintains professionalism, confidentiality, and composure under pressure

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Completion of facility-based Nurse Assistant or Nurse Tech orientation and competency validation required

Licenses/Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within facility-designated timeframe
  • De-escalation training required within facility-designated timeframe
  • Certification as a Nurse Aide or completion of first semester of accredited nursing program preferred

Experience

  • Minimum six (6) months of experience in acute care or critical care setting preferred
