Job Summary

The Manager – Psychiatric Services oversees the daily operations and clinical care delivery of designated inpatient behavioral health units. This role is accountable for ensuring high-quality, patient-centered mental health services by supervising clinical staff, managing resources, coordinating treatment planning, and supporting staff development. The Manager works collaboratively with nursing leadership, therapists, and medical providers to maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and to foster a therapeutic and safe environment for patients. 

Essential Functions

  • Supervises nursing and support staff; conducts evaluations, staffing, and scheduling to ensure appropriate coverage. 
  • Participates in and oversees the development and implementation of patient treatment plans, including assessment, psycho-diagnosis, and discharge planning. 
  • Ensures timely completion of psychosocial assessments and treatment documentation. 
  • Coordinates with therapists to ensure provision of group, individual, and family therapy. 
  • Leads daily operations, manages unit milieu safety, and ensures adherence to behavioral health policies and standards. 
  • Participates in administrative on-call rotation and responds to behavioral or clinical emergencies. 
  • Maintains accurate records and progress reports; monitors patient condition and reports significant changes. 
  • Participates in community outreach, referral development, and program growth initiatives. 
  • Conducts monthly staff meetings and supports ongoing education and professional development. 
  • Serves as a resource and advocate for patients, staff, and families. 
  • Ensures compliance with safety protocols, HIPAA, Joint Commission, and other regulatory standards. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Experience

  • Critical thinking and sound clinical judgment 
  • Effective verbal and written communication 
  • Time management, conflict resolution, and staff mentoring 
  • Knowledge of behavioral health regulations, therapeutic models, and trauma-informed care 
  • Ability to perform physical interventions and manage behavioral emergencies when necessary 
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting up to 50 pounds 
  • Must be physically able to assist in de-escalation and crisis intervention procedures 
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing; full range of motion in extremities  
  • Inpatient psychiatric unit; exposure to high-stress, fast-paced environment 
  • Possible exposure to bodily fluids, sharp instruments, communicable diseases, and aggressive behaviors 

Qualifications

Education

  • Post-graduate degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or related behavioral health field (Preferred) 
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program (Preferred) 

Licenses/Certifications

  • Consideration for LCSW, LPC, LBP, LMFT, or LADC (Preferred) 
  • RN License (Preferred) 
  • BLS – Required within first week of hire 
  • First Aid – Required within timeframe specified by facility policy 
  • De-escalation training – Required within timeframe specified by facility policy 

Experience

  • Prior inpatient behavioral health experience (Required) 
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience (Preferred)
