Job Summary

The Activities Coordinator facilitates therapeutic recreation and rehab groups for patients in the Behavioral Health Unit(s). This role includes conducting activity-based assessments, contributing to individualized treatment planning, and supporting overall patient well-being through engagement and observation. The coordinator ensures a safe and structured environment by adhering to safety protocols and participating in unit inspections. This position plays a key role in fostering a healing atmosphere through meaningful activity programming

Essential Functions

  • Patient Engagement & Programming: Plan and lead a variety of group activities (e.g. art, movement, discussion groups) for patients of varying ages and mental health needs.
  • Conduct activity-based assessments for newly admitted patients and contribute input to interdisciplinary treatment planning.
  • Adapt activities to meet individual patient capabilities and therapeutic goals.
  • Patient Monitoring & Safety: Observe and report patient behaviors and group participation to clinical staff.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, secure, and trauma-informed unit environment.
  • Participate in safety rounds and inspections to uphold unit standards.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with nursing and clinical teams to coordinate patient care and adjust group content based on unit needs.
  • Attend treatment team meetings as needed.
  • Promote a welcoming and respectful environment for patients, families, and coworkers.
  • Administrative & Support Duties: Maintain accurate group documentation and participation records.
  • Support new staff training and unit orientation as assigned.
  • Respond to medical emergencies in accordance with training and facility policy.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Basic understanding of behavioral health and therapeutic approaches to care.
  • Ability to remain calm and compassionate in emotionally charged situations.
  • Proficient in reading and writing basic medical documentation.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.



Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Recreational Therapy, Sociology, Human Services, or related behavioral health field required.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Licensed Social Worker or equivalent behavioral health credential preferred, if applicable by state regulations.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within established timeframe.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or de-escalation training required within established timeframe.

Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in behavioral health, psychiatric services, social services, recreational therapy, or related healthcare setting preferred.
  • Experience facilitating group activities or therapeutic programming preferred.
