The Lab Assistant II performs advanced technical and clerical duties across multiple laboratory functions, including specimen collection, processing, data entry, and quality control activities. This role supports training of new staff, assists with quality improvement initiatives, and serves as a key liaison for clinical and administrative coordination. The Lab Assistant II demonstrates increased competency, autonomy, and leadership relative to the Lab Assistant I role.
Collects, receives, identifies, labels, processes, and transports specimens including send-outs and drop-offs.
Performs clerical and administrative duties including phones, data entry, and documentation.
Assists with and performs waived laboratory testing.
Supports training and onboarding of new Lab Assistants.
Maintains and troubleshoots lab equipment and phlebotomy stations.
Collaborates with providers and staff to ensure timely communication of results.
Participates in laboratory quality improvement projects and in-service training.
Maintains supply inventory and ensures lab area is organized, clean, and compliant with infection control standards.
Responds to laboratory incidents and assists in utility failure procedures.
Communicates with supervisor on opportunities for quality and process enhancements.
Proficient in EMR/LIS systems and understanding of laboratory workflows.
Strong communication, training, and organizational skills.
Demonstrates initiative, leadership potential, and critical thinking.
Skilled in handling biological specimens safely and accurately.
Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and performing regular physical activity in a clinical setting.
Maintains confidentiality and adheres to HIPAA, OSHA, and accreditation standards.
Functions effectively in a fast-paced, high-complexity laboratory environment.
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent, including education equivalent to completion of secondary school or demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the role (required)
Licenses/Certifications
None required upon hire
Experience
Prior registration and supervisory experience in a hospital or physician office setting (required)
Prior experience demonstrating strong knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance rules and regulations (required)
Prior experience demonstrating familiarity with medical terminology (preferred)
