Position Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Heart and Vascular, this position has responsibility for departmental management of both the Heart and Vascular and Endoscopy departments. Responsibilities include, but not limited to the direct supervision of the functions and activities within/across the department; interpreting and enforcing governing policies, standards, and regulations of the Medical Center to department personnel and other members of the interdisciplinary team; implementing and monitoring staff’s adherence to strict patient safety practices; and assuring the capacity to serve patients on a 24‑hour basis delivering high-quality patient care.

The Manager must demonstrate critical thinking, adaptability, and experience necessary to provide leadership and strategic direction for the departments.They must acquire, demonstrate knowledge, and lead practices of LifePoint’s National Quality Program and the Foundational Five Principles.

Primary (Essential) Duties:

  1. Meets with the Director of Heart and Vascular routinely to discuss departmental objectives, policies and procedures, standards of care, management and personnel concerns, incidents and emergencies pertinent to patient care operations, personnel management, and other issues affecting the department. Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks in a strategic glide path for execution and completion. 
    Organization and direction of functions and activities in responsible departments:
  2. Provides for effective and efficient utilization of resources: personnel, equipment, and facility.  Establishes an environment that will provide for the provision of quality patient care within the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the department, Division, and Medical Center.
    • Plans, directs, and evaluates departmental routines. Ensures principles of patient safety and quality throughout.
    • Evaluates patient care, work performance, techniques, and fulfillment of nursing tasks meets evidence-based practice standards. Regularly evaluates department for compliance with policies and procedures, goals, objectives, and philosophy.  Takes appropriate action when noncompliance occurs. Conducts root cause analyses and other strategies to avoid repetition.
    • Meets with the director concerning department staffing, patient care planning, maintenance of supplies and equipment, problem-solving and staff development where appropriate. Invites director to briefs, huddles, and debriefs as applicable. Schedules and meets with other C-suite leaders to conduct Executive Patient Safety Rounds in department.
    • Establishes an environment that will provide for the provision of quality patient care within the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the department, Division, and Medical Center. Inspects department regularly for compliance with policies and procedures, goals, objectives, and philosophy.  Takes appropriate action when noncompliance occurs.
    • Provides for effective and efficient utilization of personnel.  Develops unit staffing patterns and time scheduling practices which: facilitate the delivery of consistent and efficient nursing care; comply with budgetary constraints and applicable policies according to individual patient acuity. Plans, directs, and evaluates departmental routines.  Leads and coordinates all activities within the department so that the continuum of care is in the best interest of patients, family members, personnel, and physicians.
    • Participates in hospital orientation programs in cooperation with the Education department. Participates with hiring, training, directing, development and evaluating of staff, and enforces regulatory standards in areas of supervision and implements in-service programs to support and comply with these standards.  Assures that appropriate departmental orientation is provided to all personnel and that timely evaluation of orienteers occurs. 
    • Monitors and adheres to cost initiatives regarding supplies, equipment, and preference cards. Evaluates the nursing care delivery system utilizing a variety of techniques such as consultation with patients and health care providers, evaluates efficient use of resources, and perceived satisfaction of patients/families. Develops cost containment strategies and helps educate unit personnel on their role in controlling costs.
    • Participates in maintaining accrediting agencies established standards and participating in the upgrading of standards by involvement in the planning of constructive change and standard processes.  Implements established policies and procedures of the Medical Center and Nursing Division, and interprets them to personnel, patients, Medical Staff, and public. Follows Society of Gastroenterology Nurse Association (SGNA), Preventative Cardiovascular Nurses Association (PCNA), Society of Vascular Nursing (SVN), American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), and American Society of PeriAnesthsia Nurses (ASPAN).  Continues to monitor for overall quality assurance and compliance.
    • Participates in hospital, Medical Staff, and Division committees as assigned.
    • Keeps up to date in the field of nursing and departmental management through current literature, attendance at workshops and seminars. Maintains education attendance records of departmental personnel in collaboration with educator.
    • Serves as a role model for professional nursing practice and professionalism in all specialties.  Encourages staff development in professional practice.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing
  • Current RN license in the state of Idaho, or licensure eligible
  • 5+ years of acute care nursing experience
  • 1 year of leadership experience
  • BLS on first day or to be assigned by the Learning Center

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in nursing
  • ANC or AONL leadership or management certification.  If not in possession at time of hire, must acquire within 3 years of hire.
  • ACLS
