Job Summary

  • The Assistant Medical Physicist supports the safe, accurate, and effective delivery of radiation therapy services through the application of medical physics principles and practices. Working under the direction and supervision of a qualified Medical Physicist, this role assists with quality assurance activities, equipment calibration, treatment plan verification, radiation safety initiatives, and regulatory compliance programs associated with radiation oncology services. The Assistant Medical Physicist collaborates closely with radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, nursing staff, and other members of the multidisciplinary cancer care team to ensure high-quality patient care and adherence to established clinical and safety standards. This position provides technical expertise, participates in performance improvement initiatives, and supports the implementation of new technologies and treatment techniques designed to improve patient outcomes. Essential Functions

  • Assists with calibration, commissioning, acceptance testing, and ongoing performance evaluation of radiation therapy equipment and imaging systems under the direction and supervision of a qualified Medical Physicist.
  • Performs assigned quality assurance and quality control testing of treatment delivery systems, simulators, imaging devices, and treatment planning systems; documents results and promptly reports deficiencies.
  • Assists with treatment plan reviews, monitor unit calculations, dose verification, and treatment delivery validation under the supervision of a qualified Medical Physicist.
  • Performs assigned patient-specific quality assurance procedures and maintains documentation supporting safe and accurate radiation therapy delivery.
  • Supports radiation protection activities, including radiation surveys, shielding evaluations, and exposure monitoring, consistent with established procedures and applicable requirements.
  • Maintains accurate records of quality assurance testing, equipment performance, and radiation safety activities to support regulatory compliance and accreditation.
  • Assists with regulatory inspections, accreditation surveys, investigation of radiation-related incidents and variances, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Collects and analyzes quality and performance data and participates in initiatives to improve patient safety, clinical workflows, treatment processes, and operational efficiency.
  • Collaborates with radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, nursing staff, vendors, and other team members; provides technical support and education on equipment operation, quality assurance, and radiation safety practices.
  • Assists with developing and updating policies and procedures and evaluating and implementing new radiation therapy technologies and treatment techniques.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations

  • Knowledge of radiation physics, dosimetry, radiobiology, and radiation protection principles.
  • Knowledge of radiation therapy equipment, imaging systems, treatment planning systems, and treatment delivery techniques.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control methods, including equipment performance testing and patient-specific treatment verification.
  • Knowledge of applicable radiation safety regulations, healthcare accreditation requirements, and patient safety and quality improvement practices.
  • Skill in mathematical calculations, technical analysis, and interpretation of measurements and quality assurance results.
  • Ability to identify equipment or treatment-related discrepancies, evaluate potential concerns, and promptly communicate findings to the supervising Medical Physicist.
  • Skill in organizing work, maintaining accurate technical records, and completing assigned activities with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly, provide staff education, and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams while working within established procedures and supervision requirements.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in physics, Radiological Physics, or a related scientific field from an accredited institution. (Required)

Licenses/Certifications

  • State licensure as required by applicable regulations. Upon Hire (Required)
  • Progress toward board certification (Preferred)

Experience

  • Previous clinical experience in a radiation oncology setting preferred. (Preferred)
